Scarborough First Communion Day – Jan 23
Thirty-five boys and girls of St Joseph RC in Scarborough celebrated their First Communion on Sunday, December 12, 2010, the third Sunday of Advent.
The children started their preparation in October 2009 with weekly sessions on Saturday mornings, taking breaks only during the school vacations. Their complete and carefully monitored preparation took place under the guidance of Audrey Parris, Belinda Parris and Catherine Spencer. Betty Belizaire was always at hand to lend assistance.
The young apostles were encouraged to participate in the church community. Apart from attending First Communion Class the students were largely involved in the parish’s Sunday-School programme. Under the tutelage of Ann Williams a junior choir has been started with the children of the class. Junior Joefield has also started a Drumming Group to accompany the choir.
In his homily on First Communion Day, parish priest, Msgr Kenneth Spence, encouraged parents to believe in their children’s ability, to not place impediments in their way and to always trust them.
The occasion was joyous and memorable as it should be. The parents of the First Communicants say a most sincere and heartfelt thank you to Mrs Parris and all others who contributed to preparing and developing these future leaders in our Church. We pray God’s blessings on all who have answered to the calling to guide and mould these young children, now and in the future.
